Animals and their forever homes
Listed below is a snapshot of some of the cats and dogs who have found their forever homes through Pet Connect Rescue in the Houston & Temple metropolitan areas.
Name: Pink Floyd
Species: Cat
Breed: DSH
Color(s): Grey Tabby
Adoption Age: 9 months
Details: Floyd was a stray being cared for by a father and his three young daughters. One morning, Floyd dragged himself up the porch steps with a badly broken back leg. It was a compound fracture, with the bone sticking out. They rushed Floyd to the vet, but they didn't have the money to fix his leg (approximately $2,000). Sadly, they told the vet to euthanize him. The vet could see what a nice young cat he was, so she asked the family to surrender him instead. They agreed, and she called Pet Connect. She said she would fix his leg if we would recover him and put him in the adoption program. We agreed. After surgery, she wrapped his leg in a pink bandage, so Floyd became Pink Floyd. He was a great patient. He never complained, just rested quietly in his crate. After a month of recovery, he found a forever home with a local family

Name: Hershey
Species: Cat
Breed: Havana Brown
Color(s): Brown
Adoption Age: 2 years
Details: Hershey and his sister were surrendered to us when their elderly owner died. She'd been ill for several months, and the cats had been alone in her home for some time. They were really stressed. Hershey, especially, had a hard time dealing with such a big change, and he spent four months in foster care, being treated for stress-related illnesses. When he was finally well, he went to the adoption center at PetSmart. That was hard for him, too, and he didn't show well. But, a kind-hearted PetSmart employee was drawn to him. She asked if she could take him home to see if he would get along with her dogs. We agreed, and Hershey went for a test visit. He passed with flying colors, even becoming best friends with the resident Rottweiler!

Name: Sparrow
Species: Cat
Breed: DMH
Color(s): Light Brown Tabby
Adoption Age: 6 months
Details: Sparrow had an old break to his left front leg that had healed badly. His owners didn't seek veterinary care when he broke his leg, and when it healed, it dragged on the ground. Over time, his leg became infected, so they took him to the shelter to be euthanized. One of our volunteers, who works at the shelter, saw him. She knew his leg needed to be amputated, but the shelter didn't have the resources to do that. Despite his obvious injury, he was a sweet guy who purred whenever he saw people, and the shelter staff didn't want to euthanize him. They asked us to help. One of our veterinarians agreed to amputate his leg at a greatly reduced price, and we whisked him in for surgery. The vet amputated his leg at the shoulder, and an experienced foster took him home for recovery. He did well, soon zipping around the house on three legs, not even missing the once injured leg. When he was fully recovered, he was adopted by a young veteran who'd been injured in Iraq. He knew what it was like to deal with a disability and felt an immediate bond with Sparrow.

Name: Sif
Species: Cat
Breed: DSH
Color(s): Calico
Adoption Age: 12 months
Details: Sif was found living in a 60+ cat colony in a rural area, 75 miles west of Houston. The property owner where the cats were living was struggling to keep the cats healthy, fed and spayed/neutered. In fact, the cats were in such poor condition, people in the nearby community sought help for the cats and contacted Pet Connect Rescue. Over the course of a two-month period, all of the cats in the colony were fully vetted with the help of Pet Connect Rescue. The cats who were adoptable were brought to Houston in hopes of finding loving homes for them. Sif was one such cat. At the time she was rescued she was severely underweight, pregnant, full of fleas and other parasites, yet bursting with love! Her affection and charming personality were hard to ignore. As soon as she was healthy and fully vetted, Sif started going to the weekend adoption events where she was quickly adopted into a loving home. In her new home she immediately demonstrated her curious and loving nature to her new parents and her two new big kitty sisters, and all agreed it was a perfect fit. Being very comfortable with other cats, Sif recently took over mom-duties to a litter of abandoned kittens: cleaning, protecting, and playing with them. Sif has recently celebrated her one-year anniversary in her loving home. She is very happy now, and living in the kind of home every kitty deserves.
